BAJURA, DECEMBER 20Acute food crisis has hit hard the locals of Rudi Village of Swamikartik Khapar Rural Municipality in Bajura. Former rural municipality chief among seven booked for graft Bajura, Humla folks hit hard for want of air tickets Dil Bahadur Dhami, a local, said that as many as 156 families of the village were facing food shortage for the last nine years.

Their fertile lands had turned barren due to the long drought, lack of irrigation facility and dry landslides, among other reasons. The villagers depend on rainwater to cultivate land.

The locals are compelled to buy food grains throughout the year.Another local Bir Bahadur Karki said that males earned money for the family and bought rice from Kolti.An irrigation channel built in the area was swept away within a year after construction.The locals said the channel could not be brought into operation after dry landslide swept it away.

The land in the village has turned barren for want of irrigation facility.Villagers said the local government had paid no attention to resolve the problem.Rudi village is three-day walking distance from the district headquarters Martadi.A local woman, Archana Karki, said they could not manage food even for the kids and they slept with empty stomach due to lack of food."The health condition of the children is said to be poor due to lack of nutritious food," she added.

Most women and children are malnourished in the village.Volunteer Bina Bhul said that most of the people in the village were deprived of nutritious diet.

She said even pregnant women and newborns were deprived of nutritious food.

Janaki Tiruwa said that the males went to India to earn livelihood.Another local Chatur Bam said the government did not bother to address their problems.Food-first Information and Action Network, Nepal, Director Ashok Singh said that the people were deprived of their right to food.A version of this article appears in the print on December 21, 2022, of The Himalayan Times. .
